Verizon Wireless launches in-depth Droid Eris video

On the heels of tomorrow's Droid Day at Verizon Wireless, the carrier has launched a YouTube video walkthrough of the HTC Droid Eris. Yes, people will inevitably learn the device as they grow accustomed to it, but I like the fact that Verizon is taking a proactive step to launch training videos (and of course, it helps them in marketing the Droid line as well).

As a tot watching The Last Starfighter, I thought that the language translation contraption in the movie was way cool. When I was studying abroad in Latin America (and schlogging my way through Spanish), I really could’ve used something like that. Too bad Jibbigo didn’t exist back then. But it does today.

The iPhone app costs a whopping $25, but judging from this demo, it looks like money well spent. Jibbigo translates English to Spanish and back again, all by voice. Although it doesn’t include a comprehensive dictionary/vocabulary yet, it seems like a must-have tool for travelers (most of its translations so far are about travel-related topics).For more info, check out Jibbigo’s site.

Here she is; Sprint's vanilla Android alternative to the Hero. With a full hardware QWERTY, an 800 MHz processor, and a luscious AMOLED display, I'd say Moment is a good contender. I'll admit, the dual launch of the BlackBerry Storm2 and Motorola Droid (even if it was just the announcement) was a bit frustrating, as it seemed to overshadow the announcement of RIM's newest BlackBerry. They're not leaving it in the dark, though - billed as "the perfect Storm," Verizon's first television spot highlighting the Storm2's capabilities (and their 3G dominance to AT&T) debuted late yesterday.

Is the advertising alone enough to change the public's perception of the Storm line?

I had a visceral reaction to this video, which might as well be called “chicks ‘n clicks.” (Granted, my reaction is probably different from the male contingent’s in our viewing audience. Yes, the ladies are super sexy. Can we talk about the phone now?)

This slick, fashion-forward promo shows off a device that we here in the U.S. can only dream about: The BL40, the fourth handset of LG’s Black Label series. It offers dual screen usability through an ultra-wide, cinema style (21:9) touchscreen that’s protected by tempered glass; GSM/HSDPA connectivity, GPS, Wifi, 1.1GB memory, with expansion up to 32GB; 5MP camera, with autofocus, flash, and vid recording; and gesture shortcuts (that let you access menus by sketching icons with your finger).

Of course, it’s a Europe/Asia device, though LG has said it will be released worldwide. But the company has never released a GSM Chocolate to a US carrier, so I wouldn’t hold my breath. It’s just as well. I hear the UI could use a little improvement. But still, isn’t it pretty?

TMo’s Moto Cliq Ad Debuts

T-mobile has unveiled its latest Android offering to the ad-watching masses, via video for the Moto Cliq. Why it chose to use a render instead of the actual handset is a little baffling to me, but otherwise, it’s a decent intro to the handset for the average consumer. (If you’re an existing customer and interested in picking this up, the Cliq’s still available for pre-order. New customers, however, will have to wait until Nov 2).

Verizon launches 'Don't Text and Drive' campaign

With several states having passed or in the process of approving legislation to ban text messaging while driving, the battle is just beginning to heat up. While European countries are resorting to extreme measures to convey the message, America's approach is a bit different, and is being supported by Verizon Wireless. Launching tonight, their "Don't Text and Drive" campaign aims to cut back on messaging while behind the wheel.

Vodafone goes for viral: The Vodafone Symphonia vid

This is what you get when you stock a wall with 1,000 handsets and orchestrate a symphonic ode to mobile phones. European carrier Vodafone NZ’s grab at viral video is almost too clever for its own good. (Way to highlight the limited audio on cell phones, guys.) Still, I admire its ambition and the sheer brain power required to make this happen. And, given the 100,000+ views, maybe it’s working. But the question is: Would it make you want to sign on the dotted line?

Gotta love sneaky-looking high-fashion models conducting a covert operation around a shiny new piece of technology. This is Sony Ericsson’s new media campaign for its new Jalou cell phone by Dolce&Gabbana.

According to Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana: “The campaign theme plays with the concept of jealousy and desire for a must have object. The protagonists are willing to do whatever is necessary to get it before everyone else. The link with the Dolce&Gabbana brand is the strong femininity, the exclusivity and luxury of the women that wear the Dolce&Gabbana clothing, use the Jalou by Dolce&Gabbana phone and embrace our world in general.”

Wow. It’s a million miles from the infamous “iDon’t” ads or the ubiquitous “There’s an app for that” commercials, which center on everyday usability. Interesting how marketing geared toward hipsters and fashionistas differs from the ones focused on the mainstream, eh?
